Spiritual master, poet, writer, artist and world peace dreamer, Sri Chinmoy was born in 1931 in Bengal, India and spent more than twenty years of his early life in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram under the tutelage of numerous great Indian teachers and scholars. In 1964 he travelled to New York City to share these teachings and insights with seekers in the West, making this city his home until his final days in 2007.

During his 76 years he founded the worldwide Sri Chinmoy Centre, a global organisation whose activities are dedicated to fostering a more peaceful world through initiatives in sport, music, humanitarian aid and various community projects. Sri Chinmoy stressed the necessity of a spiritual approach to world peace and encouraged the teaching of meditation as a foundation, seeing the inner peace which meditation cultivates as a pre-condition of any lasting peace in the world.

Sri Chinmoy’s creative outpouring and tireless dedication have resulted in an astonishing legacy of writings, works of art, musical compositions and inspiration – his life now stands as one of the most remarkable of our times. He visited New Zealand on four occasions and forged enduring friendships with many of our sports personalities and civic leaders.
