My Love of Light is My Spiritual Will

An appreciation of Songs of the Soul, by Sri Chinmoy.

Of all Sri Chinmoy’s books, my favourite is Songs of the Soul.

The first time I read it, it mostly went right over my head. It took a while for me to get used to the style of writing, so I could feel the truths inside.

Rather than offering a lengthy discourse, it is as if Sri Chinmoy is singing of the experiences of the soul through his words. Though he expresses everything very simply, I began to feel that the truths contained within the words immense, and all I needed to hear. When the infinite truth is expressed in any form it is, naturally, large enough to contain all the truths of the Universe.

At one stage during the time I was reading the book a lot, one line: “My love of light is my spiritual will,” kept coming into my mind, though it meant nothing to me. At the same time I was keeping up a discussion in my mind about whey I meditate, why I follow a spiritual path.

I’m not in it for the money, so to speak. Divine love, divine peace, and bliss; presumably these are all coming, but what really keeps me on the spiritual path is just that I love it.

Then suddenly, these thoughts met with: “My love of light is my spiritual will,” and bam! I realised this was the same concept my mind had been battling to articulate over the several past days, expressed so beautifully, so simply, so perfectly. And I thought, “O my God. What else is in this book?”[1]

I sincerely reccommend you read it.

[1] The next line is “Within it is the power infinite.”
